As we passed through the Mojave desert backcountry, we needed a place to stop over for a day or two. I had read that RV overnight parking might be allowed in the parking lot of Amboy Crater, a National Natural Landmark.

We visited the site in early February 2022 and were pleasantly surprised by the nicely paved, level parking areas not too far off the old Route 66 highway. The expansive desert vistas, nearby volcano dome, and surrounding black lava fields make for a picturesque scene. Being away from any large cities the dark night sky stargazing is amazing!

There is also a popular Route 66 historical attraction down the road a bit in Amboy called Roy’s Motel and Cafe.

This video provides a satellite map overview of its location. Then some ground footage and information on the hiking trail to view the crater.
