I’ve done quite a few reviews on lithium batteries, mostly focusing on the higher-end, pricier models like Lion Energy, SFK, and Xantrex. But recently, I’ve been encouraged to look at more budget-friendly options. I took a look at a battery from WattCycle, their 12V 300 Ah Mini, which is significantly cheaper than the upscale models. It caught my attention because it seemed like a good fit for many RVers. However, after receiving it, I found out through another YouTuber’s video, Will Prowse, that there was some controversy regarding the actual capacity of the battery cells. They were labeled as 300 Ah but only added up to 280 Ah. WattCycle has since acknowledged this labeling issue and offered refunds, a warranty extension, and plans to introduce a correctly rated model.
I also noted from Will’s video that the battery didn’t have proper high-current protection; it didn’t shut down even under extreme loads, which could be dangerous. The battery has a good physical design with a waterproof casing, which I plan to use in my boat for powering the bow thruster and anchor. Before that, I decided to test it in my truck’s toolbox, a mobile test bed for various electrical components. I’ve installed it there to see how it performs under real-world conditions over time. I’ll keep you updated on its performance. I’ve done some initial charge and discharge tests, which seem promising, although I’m cautious about the battery’s internal safety features. Today I got my hands on an updated 280 amp-hour battery from WattCycle. Back in January, I reviewed their “Mini” battery, labeled as 300 amp-hours but actually only 280, with a BMS that didn’t shut off under high current. The company owned up to the mistake, offered refunds, and sent me this improved version to test. This time, it’s correctly labeled 280 amp-hours, has a 200-amp BMS with Bluetooth, and feels more polished overall.
I put it through its paces—first hooking up heaters to push it past 200 amps. At 250 amps, the discharge protection kicked in and shut it off, proving they’ve fixed the issue. Then I popped the lid (which took some effort due to its silicone seal) and checked the build quality. Inside, it’s impressive: insulated terminals, a sturdy metal frame, high-quality wires, and laser-welded aluminum bus bars. It even has low-temperature sensors and a Bluetooth chip—details that show they’ve listened to feedback.
My only critique? I’d prefer an easier-to-remove lid. If something fails years down the line—like the BMS—you’d want to service it, especially since the cells could last a decade or more. Still, everything inside looks repairable and well-made. I’m pairing this battery with the earlier one I have (also 280 amp-hours) for a total of 560 amp-hours in my RV. I’ll use them for the next two months of camping, then update you when I switch them to my boat in May to power the bow thruster and anchor. So far, WattCycle’s stepped up their game—kudos to them!
