This is one of the last trips of the season. We left our quiet four-night stay in Von Donop Inlet on Cortes Island on September 18th and ran out around the top of the island, down Lewis Channel, and into the heart of Desolation Sound. Late September is our favourite time here. The crowds are gone, and the weather has stayed calm and sunny. We headed for a tight little notch on East Redonda Island that we scouted a couple of years ago, just across from Prideaux Haven, Melanie Cove, and Laura Cove.

There is barely room for one boat and not much swing room, so we stern-tied to a big log to keep us off the rocks. Morning light over Homfrey Channel and the mountains is beautiful, with a bit of fog drifting through. I took the dinghy out for a better look at the famous peaks, then tried fishing along a steep underwater ledge. A big school of fish showed up in the cove overnight, and I came back with a keeper rockfish and a lingcod for fish and chips. We had the whole place to ourselves, good solitude, and great views even if the evening sun disappears early behind the trees. We will stay one more day, then move closer to Lund, probably Grace Harbour, before we pull the boat in about a week and head back to the RV. September has been a gift. Desolation Sound is mostly ours for now.
