We’ve been down near Ajo, Arizona for almost two months now. January was spent boondocking on the public lands around here, not moving around much as we’re trying to save on fuel after splurging on the bottom restoration of our boat, Vestr, last spring. That project really took a chunk out of our budget, so we’re currently in conservation mode until we get back to an even keel.

Ajo is a charming little desert town. It’s got a beautiful old plaza with murals all over the walls, making it quite the artistic hub. There’s an upcoming 44th annual old-time fiddle festival at the golf course, with one day of free concerts here in the plaza. We might check that out, as we’ve enjoyed it in the past. The town is also buzzing with activity now that the big RV show, Schooliepalooza, and Rubber Tramp Rendezvous are over, and there’s definitely an uptick in RVs around here.

Since we’ve been stationary, I haven’t produced many travel videos, focusing instead on product reviews, modifications, and repairs to our RV. It needs some TLC, especially now that our time is split between the RV and the boat. I’m planning to spend about a month in an RV park with hookups to address some maintenance issues like replacing trailer tires, repacking bearings, adjusting brakes, and doing some cosmetic touch-ups like removing cracked decals and giving the whole rig a deep clean.

I’ve chosen an RV park about 10 miles from Ajo in Why, Arizona, at Hickiwan Trails. It’s not the fanciest place, but it’s peaceful, half-full usually, and has the basic amenities we need. The area around is scenic with lots of cacti, ideal for hiking and photography, especially near the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

The RV itself has been good to us, and while some suggest getting a new one, I prefer maintaining what we have, especially since we’ve customized it to our lifestyle. As for the truck, it’s nearing some maintenance like tire replacements and an oil change. There was an issue with an oil leak which seems resolved after changing a clogged filter, and there’s an ABS system recall which will be covered by warranty, saving us some cash.
