In this latest Boating 2026 season video, Anne navigates our boat from Hanson Island at the bottom end of Blackfish Sound up north across the Queen Charlotte Strait and up Wells Passage to an anchorage called Carriden Bay. The early morning crossing was quite foggy but calm, though Anne did have to dodge a great deal of logs that were pulled off shore by the recent extremely high tides. We had a couple of nice sunny days in Carriden Bay and a pair of rainy ones. One of the rainstorms included a thunder-and-lightning show!
A highlight of the stay was seeing a black bear twice out foraging during low tides. This bay features a beautiful view of Mount Stephens and a small estuary that attracts all sort of birdlife. It’s not a popular one, so over the course of 5 nights, we were the only boat, save one night when a sailboat joined us.
Anchor holding was good, and it never got too windy in the bay. That may change if there is a strong out of the east, as the bay is wide open in that direction. Stay tuned, as next we are planning to cruise around the corner and head up Drury Inlet, an area we have yet to explore.
