In this episode, we push farther north into the beautiful Broughton Archipelago on the BC coast aboard our 1976 CHB 34 trawler Vestri. The scenery just keeps getting more spectacular as we wind our way through narrow passages and remote islands.

We had our hearts set on Potts Lagoon, a classic spot known for great crabbing and the chance to spot grizzly bears foraging along the shoreline. But Mother Nature had other plans. With several days of gale-force winds forecast (up to 40 knots screaming through Johnstone Strait), we decided to play it safe. Instead of risking an uncomfortable or exposed anchorage, we motored farther north and tucked into a tiny, ultra-secluded gem called Lady Boot Cove.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. Protected and peaceful, Lady Boot Cove gave us a perfect storm shelter while we waited out the blow. Even better, we arrived right at the start of some very low, negative tides. This let us explore several stunning exposed reefs that are normally hidden underwater, absolutely teeming with colourful marine life!

I deployed the underwater action cam and captured some fantastic footage. Standout highlights include dozens of massive Painted Anemones in vibrant greens, reds, and purples, a beautiful Sunflower Sea Star, and plenty of active shrimp darting around the rocks. Anne and I spent hours carefully exploring the tide pools and reefs; it felt like having our own private aquarium right at the boat.

If you love remote BC coastal cruising, tide pooling, marine wildlife, and safe anchoring strategies in unpredictable weather, this one’s for you.
