I recently tackled an issue with our boat’s Side Shift bow thruster. After a complete overhaul last year, which included sanding, repainting, and upgrading the wiring with a lithium battery system, the thruster failed to respond at Port McNeill Marina due to a faulty wireless controller. Frustrated by recurring wireless issues, including interference from VHF signals, I decided to eliminate the wireless setup.

I installed a 12-gauge duplex cable, hardwiring a two-way momentary toggle switch on the fly bridge to a relay that controls the thruster’s direction by grounding specific pins. I also added a kill switch for safety. The new setup is powered by two 280 amp-hour lithium batteries, which handled the thruster’s 330–375 amp draw. A small solar controller now maintains the battery charge, replacing a previous DC-to-DC charger. This hardwired solution ensures smoother, trouble-free docking.
