After we visited Echo Bay in the last video, we motored a short distance south to a pretty little anchorage among the islets between Seabreeze Island and the larger Gilford Island. We spotted a black bear rolling over huge rocks on the shore as we entered the anchorage via a narrow channel.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great for the next two days, so we spent most of them inside the boat. Some calm weather was on the horizon, and we were running out of fresh food, so we decided to make the couple-hour trip to Port McNeill to resupply once more. An overnight stop at the North Island Marina allowed us to shop at the nearby IGA grocery store plus fill our fuel & water tanks.
In this video, you’ll see all the wildlife we were treated to. It started with a good-sized pod of Orca (Killer Whales) crossing our path. Then, a large raft of sea otters! I’ve always wanted to see that. They are so cute. On the way back, there were many Humpback Whale sightings in Blackfish Sound, with a pair putting on a tremendous show. Tail slapping and launching out of the water for about a 1/2 hour. Several others came very close to our boat. Their loud blows were a bit startling when so near. Such huge animals!
The video ends with a peaceful dinghy ride around our next anchorage, Dusky Cove, back inside the famed Broughton Archipelago Marine Park. We spotted a momma black bear and three cubs foraging on the beach during the ride and saw a beautiful big Osprey.
It was a wildlife-packed few days! We even caught two salmon, three Dungeness crabs, and a rockfish for dinners. We’re loving our summer up here!
